Egypt President Mursi approves new constition

Egyptian voters overwhelmingly constitution drafted by President Mohamed Mursi approved allies, results published Tuesday showed shows that liberals, leftists and Christians are powerless to the rise of Islamists to power to stop.

Opposition groups had taken to the streets to block what they see as a step to ram through a charter that politics and religion dangerous mixtures and ignore the rights of minorities.

Mursi the first constitution of the text and Egypt since Mubarak's fall offering adequate protection of minorities, and the determination of the necessary quickly to put an end two years of turmoil and political uncertainty that has devastated the economy.

Final Election Commission figures showed that the Constitution was adopted by 63.8 percent of the vote in the referendum in two days this month, giving Mursi Islamists their third straight victory since veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in a 2011 revolution.

In a sign that the weeks of unrest further has taken toll on the economy, the government ordered new restrictions on foreign currency apparently intended to prevent capital flight. Abandoned or more than $ 10,000 cash is now banned.

Urban secularists and liberals who are behind the uprisings complain that their success has been hijacked.

"We have a better constitution," said Khaled Dawood, an opposition spokesman. "It does not represent all Egyptians."

Washington, billions of dollars a year in military and other aid to Egypt offers, and see it as a pillar of security in the Middle East, urged the Egyptian politicians to bridge divisions and all parties to reject violence.

Worsening economy

The government says that opponents of the economic crisis aggravated by prolonging political unrest. She has promised unpopular tax increases and cuts to generate a loan package to win the International Monetary Fund.

The prohibition to travel with more than $ 10,000 in cash followed a commitment by the central bank for the unspecified measures to protect the Egyptian banks. Some Egyptians have begun to withdraw their savings in fear more restrictions.

"I'm not going to even more money in the bank and will not a lot of the people I know," said Ayman Osama, father of two young children.

He said he had taken from the equivalent of about $ 16 000 from his account this week and plans to attract more and added that he told his wife to buy more gold jewelry.

The "yes" vote paves the way for elections in about two months, setting the stage for another battle between rising Islamists and their tough opponents.

The final results, announced by the Electoral Commission, which is tailored to the last decimal an earlier unofficial count announced by the Muslim Brotherhood Mursi.

But the opposition said it was disappointed it did appeal to the result to be changed to reflect what they described as the main voice violations during the two-round vote.
