American soldier dies in Afghanistan attack
A U.S. soldier was killed in a suicide attack on a NATO airbase outside the Afghan city of Kandahar.
Two Afghan civilians also died in the blast and more than 10 other people, including three U.S. soldiers were wounded. Local police said a car packed with explosives was detonated next to the NATO base vehicles.
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack in an e-mail to the Associated Press news agency.
Mr Panetta later met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai to discuss the number of U.S. troops staying in Afghanistan after the main body pulls at the end of 2014
U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta had visited Kandahar air base earlier on Thursday. U.S. officials said they did not believe the attack was linked to the visit.
At a joint press conference, the defense minister said Mr Karzai would meet with President Obama in Washington next month for further discussion on forces.
