Success and appreciation of the film "Life of Pi"

Success and appreciation of the film "Life of Pi"

New epic Oscar-winning director Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" shows the relationship between a teenage Indian boy and a Bengal tiger. But in reality, the predators under increasing threat from humans. Poaching remains a major threat to the remaining cat population, with the increasing demand for tigers in East Asia, particularly China, where tiger bones used in traditional medicine, experts say.

Increasing human-animal conflict is also one of the main reasons for the decline in tiger numbers.

The animal rights group PETA hopes popularity of the film to use people's attention focused on the real life situation Bengal tigers.

"Life of Pi is a work of fiction, but in real life, there are threats to the animals in their natural habitat to be solved," says Manilal Valliyate, director of veterinary affairs of PETA India.

India is home to 1,706 tigers, according to the latest census, nearly half of the world population. However, this figure is a fraction of the 40,000 who roamed the country in 1947 at the time of independence of the country.Filmmaker Sapal says it is quite natural for people to get the tiger to look like a dangerous animal, but his reputation as a voracious killer is misplaced.

"Tigers kill for sport. They have no meat to be stored in deep-fridge. They kill their prey when they are hungry," he said. "If we have people understand the importance of tiger in our food chain and ecosystem, we would have won half the battle."

The other half - against poachers greedy for tigers - can only be won with constant surveillance and patrols, said Belinda Wright, director of the nonprofit Wildlife Protection Society of India. "The tragedy is tigers are valued more dead than alive by wildlife criminals," says Wright. "There can no longer compromise on our conservation efforts if we want these beautiful animals to survive."
