Software founder John McAfee was arrested by police in Guatemala on Wednesday to enter the country illegally, hours after he said he would seek asylum in the Central American country.
Interior Minister Mauricio Lopez Bonilla said McAfee was detained by police in a hotel in an upscale Guatemala City neighborhood with the help of Interpol agents. He offered no other details.
Earlier Wednesday, McAfee said he formally sought asylum in Guatemala, claiming he is a victim of persecution in neighboring Belize, where officials have said that he is a person of interest in the murder of a fellow ex-pat.
McAfee was last Wednesday in an old three-storey building was formerly home to immigrants illegally Guatemala.
The 67-year-old went on the run from Belize last month after officials tried to question him about the fatal shooting of a neighbor. McAfee had engaged in a series of clashes with neighbors and authorities over allegations that he was aggressive dogs, illegal arms and drug paraphernalia held in his beachfront home on a Belize island. McAfee acknowledges that his dog was annoying and Faull had complained about them, but denies killing Faull.
McAfee lives in the small Central American country of about four years, and want to return to that eventually. But he says he was framed, and denies any involvement in the murder of his neighbor.
"We have a disagreement about a dog. I had disagreements with all my neighbors about my dogs. I had a disagreement with myself about my dogs. They were loud," he said.
"Why should I behind the body and all the evidence?" he asked. "I'm not stupid."
