Reality TV star and Singer Jenni Rivera dies in plane accident
Millions of fans on both sides of the US-Mexican border is mourning the death of Jenni Rivera, whose performance of soulful ballads sold out concert halls and made the singer a household name for many.
Crews searching for the remains of Rivera and six others Monday in the middle of the wreckage of a plane that crashed in a remote, mountainous area of northern Mexico on Sunday.
"The plane was completely destroyed .... It is a great tragedy," her brother, Gustavo Rivera, told CNN en Español.
There were no survivors, and the singer's publicist, legal and makeup artists were among the victims, he said. Family members planned to travel to Mexico on Monday as investigators are working to determine what caused the crash.
Gather evidence on the ground could last up to 10 days, said Alejandro Argudin, according to Notimex. The wreck that personal items belonging to singer features, spread over an area extending up to 300 meters (over 320 feet), officials said.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said Monday that it is dispatching a team to help with the investigation.
Speaking on the Senate floor Monday, described Senator Marco Rubio Rivera as "a true American success story."
"She was a singer in a genre of music that is largely dominated by men, and they brought a powerful voice with which genre they openly praised her fight for her children a better life in this country," Florida Republican senator said.
Rivera sold 15 million albums, according to Billboard, and recently won two Billboard Music Awards, including favorite female artist Mexican music.
Her father, Pedro, and two of her brothers are also well known artists in Mexico and parts of the Southwest.
Famous for her music, she is also known for his tumultuous personal life. The singer was a single mother at the age of 15 and is the mother of five children, her website said.
In 2009, she made headlines when she was detained in Mexico City airport with tens of thousands of dollars in cash.
A year later, she made headlines with her marriage to former baseball pitcher Esteban Loaiza, who played for the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers. In October, she said that she was divorce after less than two years of marriage. It was her third marriage.
