The gunman, who also died, has not yet been formally identified by police.

But officials told U.S. media that the murderer on Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, was a 20-year-old son of a teacher at the school. He is believed to have killed her for the attack.

Early reports called 24-year-old Ryan Lanza as the shooter, but anonymous officials later said his brother Adam, 20, was the suspect.

Ryan Lanza of Hoboken, New Jersey, was questioned by police, reported U.S. media, but was not considered suspicious.

Police Lt. Paul Vance said 18 children were pronounced dead at the school, and two died after being taken to hospital. Six adults were killed, and the gunman died at the scene, apparently having shot himself.

A person was also injured, and police are investigating half offense in Newtown, where another victim was found dead - the shooter understand the mother.

Dressed in black and wearing a bulletproof vest, the shooter is believed to have had different weapons.

These consisted of two guns - a Glock and a Sig Sauer - and 0223-caliber rifle reported.

The murders took place in two rooms in a part of the school, police said.

One of the parents, Stephen Delgiadice, eight-year-old daughter was at Sandy Hook School on Friday, but was not injured, said the shooting was traumatic for the city.

"It is alarming, particularly in Newtown, Connecticut, we always thought the safest place in America," Mr. Delgiadice told AP.

At a memorial service in Newtown people crowded outside the doors of the church as Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy addressed collected.

He called the attack an "unspeakable tragedy of terms", says "you can never be prepared" for an event like this.

In Washington, held about 200 people a guard for the victims outside the White House, while others protested calling for arms control.

Schools locked

Police arrived at the school shortly after 9:40 local time (14:40 GMT) on Friday in response to reports that a gunman was the principal of the school office and someone had "a large number of gunshot wounds."

Witnesses reported hearing dozens of shots fired, by suggesting that "there must have been 100 rounds" in an interview with CNN.

Parents Richard Wilford says his seven year old son Richie described a sound that "sounded like what he described as cans fall".

Mr. Wilford says that his son teacher opened the classroom door and told the children to crawl into a corner until police arrived.
