India and Pakistan in Kashmir border skirmish

India and Pakistan in Kashmir border brush

Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged fire across the Line of Control in the disputed region of Kashmir.

Pakistan said Indian troops had invaded a military post in the Haji Pir sector of Pakistani Kashmir, killing one soldier and wounding another.

An Indian army spokesman Pakistan had "started unprovoked firing" in Indian military posts.

Kashmir is claimed by both nations in its entirety and has a flash point between them for over 60 years.

The Pakistani military public relations office said the two sides are still exchanging fire in the vicinity.

It said Indian troops had "physically attacked a checkpoint called Sawan Patra".

The Haji Pir Pass is just south of the main road from Muzaffarabad in Pakistan-administered Kashmir to Srinagar in Indian-administered Kashmir.

"Pakistani troops effectively responded to the attack," he said, adding that Indian troops had left weapons as they retreated.

Col Brijesh Pandey, a spokesman for the Indian army in Kashmir, told the Associated Press news agency that Pakistani troops "initiated unprovoked firing" with mortars and automatic weapons in Indian military posts. A residential house was destroyed, he said.
"We took revenge only using small arms. We believe that it was clearly an attempt on their part to infiltration of militants to facilitate," Col Pandey said.

There is a ceasefire in Kashmir since the end of 2003.

India suspended a peace process with Pakistan following attacks by Pakistan-based militants in Mumbai in 2008. The negotiations resumed in February last year.
