Britain's Prince William and his wife Catherine are expecting their first child, the prince's office said on Monday.
Boy or girl, the child will be third in line to the throne Prince William and expected to succeed.
"Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are pleased to announce that the Duchess of Cambridge expecting a child," the agency said in a statement.
The announcement comes as Kate, who married William 19 months ago, was hospitalized Monday for King Edward VII Hospital in central London with acute morning sickness.
The news came a few days after the duchess, a royal appearance, was playing hockey with schoolchildren at her old school.
Not only are they attractive young couple popular - with easy common William touch remember much of his mother, the late Diana - but their child is expected to play an important role in the British national life playing for decades.
