American fighters killed in 'ambush' in New York State

Two American volunteer fire men were killed and two wounded while responding to an emergency call in the town of Webster in New York state.

Police say the four were shot in an "apparent trap" when they arrived Monday morning. The fire broke out just before 06:00 local time (11:00 GMT) and officers lived in an armored car to evacuate.

A gunman was later found dead at the scene, police said.

The man was 62-year-old William Spengler, said Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering media. Spengler appeared to have shot himself in the head, said Mr. Pickering.

He has previously served a 17-year prison term after being convicted of killing his grandmother. Spengler sister is missing and police fear they were killed in the fire that engulfed seven houses.

Mr Pickering told reporters: "It seems that it was a trap.

"These people get up in the middle of the night to go out fires, and do not expect to be shot."

The two injured firefighters were identified as Joseph Court saps and Theodore Scardino. Roger Vercruysse, described as a friend of William Spengler, was quoted by the Associated Press as saying that the shooter his sister who lived with him "could not stand".

Mr. Vercruysse said that Mr. Spengler "his mother happy death" and added that he was "crazy" after her death in October.
